Modern Man Remains The Wildest Animal

I live in a kind of fear and despair all the time.  I read the newspaper every day and see what people are doing to one another, how they kill or provoke others to kill.  In Lebanon, for example, there is a rage that has taken over the whole population.  Everybody hates and is ready to kill everybody else.  Sometimes I am afraid that Lebanon is an indication of what may happen to the whole of humanity.  Something will break our ― a revolution, a counterrevolution ― and people will just drink one another's blood.  I tremble at the low state we have fallen into.

 

It is true that, in the past, wars went on all the time.  Still, all people had hope that men would get wiser, that they would know more science and more about human nature so that they might change.  But nothing has changed except that weapons are becoming more dangerous and people more vulnerable.  As weapons become stronger, our situation becomes weaker.

 

The daily news tells us again an again that, with all his knowledge and with all his refined ways, modern man remains the wildest animal.

 

“Scientists sell their achievements to murderers”

 

In the past, I didn't say what I am saying now about humanity because I had read in books that the 20th century was blessed.  Being a young man, I didn't dare to say that the whole thing was a lie.  But now that I'm an old man, why shouldn't I say how I feel?

 

What makes me despair more than anything is the scientists, whom God has given great brains and a lot of diligence, sell their achievements to murderers.  Every day we get more and more inventions, and many of them are used for killing our brothers and sisters.

 

I don't mean to say that great scientists such as Michael Faraday, who discovered the principle of the electric motor, and James Maxwell, known for his work in electricity and magnetism, did the wrong thing.  They discovered things that are now used for our refrigerators, for lighting up houses at night.  But when scientific powers are being used to destroy people it is a great tragedy.  I had hopes that the scientists should be the first ones to say, “We are not going to do our work for such purposes.” But they are somehow morally stagnant.  They just keep on doing their work without caring one way or the other. “The media did a lot of moral damage”

 

I'm also in despair because people take what is happening almost for granted.  They read about thousands of people being destroyed, and then they turn to the stock tables as if nothing had really happened.  People take the attitude: “It happens to other people; it's not going to happen to me.” In that way, I would say that civilization has hardened men's hearts more than it has softened them.

 

In this respect, the media did a lot of moral damage.  You become less sensitive to other people's anguish if you hear about it all the time. “You see it every day, you have to make peace with it.” That is how modern man feels.

 

“A man must say what he considers important”

 

In my newest book, The Penitent, the protagonist, whom I don't identify with completely, says many of the same things I have just said about modern man.  The critics all said that I was preaching instead of writing a novel.  Who cares if this little book is a novel or a diatribe or if it is even preaching?  Actually, in the Yiddish edition the word novel did not appear.  There is a time when a man must say what he considers important.

 

I'm sure that many others feel the same way, but they don't know what to do.  They cannot all write novels or diatribes.  And how will what I'm saying help?  It's talking to the wall, Still, there is a time when even a novelist, who is supposed to entertain the reader, feels like asking: “Where are we going?  What will happen to us?”

 

Storytelling will not really cure us.  The best novel will not change things.  Still, when I write I am able to forget for a while the so-called human condition.  And many of my readers tell met that reading does the same for them.  They call me up and say: “I'm reading now your stories, and I forget for a while.” This is the maximum that literature can really accomplish:  To give people half an hour of rest.

사람들은 서로들 서로의 피를 마시려 들 것이다.

 

나는 항시 일종의 공포와 절망 속에서 살고 있다.  나는 날마다 신문을 읽어 사람들이 서로들 어떤 행동을 하고 또 그들이 어떻게 사람을 죽이고 다른 사람들에게 어떻게 살인을 사주하는가를 보게 된다.  예컨대 레바논에서는 전국민이 분노에 차 있다.  모든 사람들이 서로 증오하고 다른 사람들을 언제든 죽이려 든다.  때때로 나는, 레바논 사태야말로 전 인류에게 닥칠 수도 있는 일을 예견케 하는 하나의 징후가 아닐까 하는 두려움마저 든다.  무엇인가가 ― 그것이 혁명이든 반혁명이든 간에―발생할 것이며 사람들은 오직 서로의 피를 마시려 들 것이다.  나는 인류가 전락해 버린 이 같은 저급한 상태에 전율한다.

 

과거에 전쟁은 항시 끊이지 않았던 것이 사실이다.  그래도 모든 사람들은 사람은 보다 더 현명해지리라는 희망을 가졌었고 또한 사람은 더 많은 과학을 알게 되고 또한 인간성에 관하여 더 많은 것을 알게 됨으로써 인간은 달라질 수 있을 것이라는 희망도 가지고 있었던 것이다.  그러나 무기들이 더욱 위험해지고 사람들은 보다 더 살상되기 쉬운 존재로 되어가고 있을 뿐 아무것도 달라진 것이 없다.  무기가 보다 더 강해지는 만큼 우리 인간의 상황은 보다 더 취약해지고 있는 것이다.

 

매일같이 전해지는 뉴스들은 현대인들이 그 모든 지식과 그 모든 세련된 방법을 가지고서도 가장 난폭한 동물의 상태에 머물러 있음을 거듭 우리에게 말해주고 있는 것이다.

 

과학자들은 그들의 업적을 살인자들에게 팔고 있다.

 

과거에 나는, 지금 내가 인류에 대해 이야기하고 있는 바를 말하지 않았었다.  왜냐하면 나는 이 책 저 책에서 20세기는 축복받는 세기라고 기술한 것을 읽었기 때문이었다.  나는 젊었기 때문에 감히 그 모든 것들이 다 거짓이라고 말할 수가 없었다.  그러나 이제 늙은이가 되어 버린 이 마당에 나의 심경을 말해서 안될 까닭이 있을까?

 

나로 하여금 그 무엇보다도 절망을 느끼게 하는 것은 신으로부터 훌륭한 두뇌와 많은 근면성을 받은 과학자들이 그들의 업적을 살인자들에게 팔아 넘긴다는 사실이다.  날마다 우리는 더욱 더 많은 발명을 해내고 그들 중의 많은 것이 우리의 형제 자매들을 죽이는 데 사용되고 있는 것이다.

 

나는 전동기의 윈리를 발견한 마이클 패러디나 전기와 자성 분야에서 이룩한 업적으로 이름난 제임즈 맥스웰과 같은 위대한 과학자들이 그릇된 일을 행했다고 주장하는 것은 아니다.  그들은 오늘날 우리들의 냉장고들에 사용되고 또한 밤에는 집안을 환히 밝히는 데 쓰이는 것들을 발견했던 것이다.  그러나 과학의 힘이 사람들을 파멸하는 데 쓰여지고 있을 때에 그것은 엄청난 비극이 되는 것이다.  나는 과학자들이 제일 먼저 『우리는 그러한 목적들을 위해서는 연구하지 않을 것이다』라고 천명하는 사람들일 것이라는 희망을 품었었다.  그러나 과학자들은 어쩐지 도덕적으로 정체되어 있는 듯하다.  그들은 결과야 어찌됐건 조금도 개의치 않고 자신들의 탐구만을 계속할 뿐이다.

 

언론매체는 도덕적으로 해를 많이 끼친다.

 

나는 또한 사람들이 지금 일어나고 있는 일들에 거의 무관심하고 있기 때문에 절망하게 된다.  그들은 파멸되는 수천 명의 사람들에 대한 기사를 읽는다.  그리고는 마치 아무 일도 실제로는 일어나지 않은 것처럼 주식시세표에 눈길을 돌린다.  사람들은 『그건 다른 사람의 일이야, 내게는 일어나지 않을 걸. 』이라는 태도를 취한다.  이런 면세서 보면 문명은 인간의 마음을 누그러지게 하기 보다는 무감각하게 했다고 보겠다.

 

이러한 점에서 언론매체는 도덕적으로 해를 많이 끼쳤다.  사람이란 다른 사람들의 괴로움에 대해서 늘 듣게 되면 그것에 대해 덜 민감해진다. 『뭐든지 매일 보게 되면 그런 거주나 해야지.』현대인은 바로 이런 식으로 느끼고 있다.

 

사람은 자신이 중요하게 여기는 것을 말해야만 한다.

 

나의 가장 최근의 작품인 『참회자』에서, 그 주인공은 내가 전적으로 동일화하는 인물은 아니지만, 현대인에 대해서 내가 방금 한 것과 같은 말들을 많이 이야기하고 있다.  비평가들은 모두 내가 소설을 쓰기보다는 설교를 하고 있다고 말했었다.  이 작은 책이 한 권의 소설 또는 통렬한 비평 심지어는 또 설교라고 한들 그 누가 아랑곳이나 하겠는가?  실제로 이디시 어반에는 「소설」이라는 단어가 나와 있지도 않았다.  사람은 그가 중요하게 여기는 것을 말해야만 할 때가 있다.

 

나는 다른 많은 사람들도 동감일 거라고 확신 하지만 그들은 어찌할 바를 모르고 있다.  그들 모두가 다 소설이나 혹평을 쓸 수는 없다.  그렇다면 내가 지금 얘기하고 있는 게 어떻게 도움이 될 것인가?  그것은 마치 벽에다 대고 이야기 하는 꼴이 될 것이다.  그럼에도 불구하고 독자를 즐겁게 해야 될 소설가일지라도 『우리는 어디로 가고 있는 것일까?  우리에게 어떤 일들이 일어나게 될 것인가?』라는 의문을 던져보고 싶은 때가 있는 것이다.

 

이야기를 쓰는 것만으로는 진정 우리를 치유하지 못할 것이다. 제아무리 훌륭한 소설이라 하더라도 상황을 변화시킬 수는 없을 것이다.  그러면서도 나는 글을 쓸 때 잠시나마 소위 인간적 상황이라는 것을 잊을 수 있다.  그리고 내 소설을 읽는 독자들 중 많은 사람들이 책을 읽노라면 자기들도 그렇게 된다고 내게 얘기 한다.  그들은 나에게 전화를 걸어 『나는 지금 당신이 쓴 이야기를 읽고 있는 중이죠.  덕분에 잠시 잊게 됩니다.』라고 말해준다. 『사람들에게 반 시간 동안의 휴식을 제공해 주는 것』이것이 곧 문학이 진실로 성취할 수 있는 최고의 효능인 것이다.
